As with any military vehicle that has enjoyed a long and extended service record, the Alvis Scorpion has seen numerous upgrades and improvements. At Aviation Marine we can provide a wide range of upgrades with typical solutions including:
Upgrade cooling systems – The Scorpions have traditionally suffered from overheating problems in hot climates. There are 3 modifications to the cooling system of the petrol Jaguar engine, and 7 modifications to the cooling system when the CVRT is converted to the Steyr Diesel. The main factors are inefficient radiator cooling matrix, cavitation and poor airflow through engine louvres. Installation of the new aluminium radiators and high efficient cyclonic element air filtration units is also used in the assistance of the cooling. We recommend the Cummins Diesel Option.
Upgrade Fuel system – With the diesel conversion, many parts have to be replaced including all upgraded pipe work, fuel tank, electrical system and gauges. The in-line anti-cavitation pumps have also been a great success for the Scorpion vehicle giving the vehicle a greater acceleration response time and eliminates idle surging.
Upgrade Electrical system – Again, there are many upgrades over the years, regarding the cabling issues we have pre-made harnesses in stock that resolve a lot of electrical faults that were common on the original scorpions. It also resolves the issues regarding the original asbestos lined cables that are now banned for the cabin environment. Other upgrades such as the brushless generator and 5 core suppression system helps stabilise the electrical supply which therefore eliminates the electrical interference, the Generator is also 4 times more reliable than the original Prestolite 140 amp
version and will also extend the life of the batteries to much the same.
Upgrade Intake & Exhaust system – The Intake filtration system has had a few upgrades depending on the environment it is operated in. The particle separator has been a great success in more sandy environments and this also cuts down the air filter replacements by half. Some parts of the exhaust system have also been modified which helps with noise suppression and heat radiation to the surrounding areas.
Transmission system – Most of the Transmission repairs and overhauls can be facilitated. The latest TN15D, TN15E or TN15E+ versions address the problems of helical gear wear with new friction materials, improved oil movement and sealing and stronger high stress components which transforms the reliability and durability of a CVR(T).
Upgrade Suspension System 3.8 Shock absorbers System – The old Armstrong dampers are now obsolete and the Messier dampers have been modified 3 times since the original installation this has removed all the wallowing of the vehicle, the Link damper arms have also been modified many times which has now eliminated the track rod end wear and has improved the CVR(T) stability. Messier are not made at present but we have stock available. New alternatives are also available.
Change double pins – The track upgrade can be carried but we are also working on a new full rubber track system.
Change Camera with thermal sight. There are 4 different variants of thermal sights we can offer including a dropdown screen.
Periscope camera – There are some new cameras available as an upgrade.
In addition to these upgrades we can also provide the following:
- Net and bar armour
- Mine blast protection
- Electronic countermeasures
- Radio systems
- Command & control battlefield system
- Embedded image periscopes
